Whether you live in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands or elsewhere, family breakdown with a Turkish connection raises cross-border questions: Can you divorce in Turkey while abroad? Will a foreign divorce update Turkish civil records? How are custody and maintenance treated?
Divorce in Turkey
Turkish family courts hear agreed and contested divorce cases under the Turkish Civil Code. Jurisdiction and applicable law follow MÖHUK and venue rules summarised in our article How to Get Divorced in Turkey While Living Abroad.
Recognition & enforcement of foreign judgments
Foreign divorce decrees generally need recognition (tanıma) before Turkish population records reflect the dissolution. Monetary orders usually need enforcement (tenfiz). See Recognition & Enforcement.
Custody and alimony
Child-related measures centre on the child’s best interests. Spousal and child support may be claimed in Turkish proceedings or enforced from foreign judgments when tenfiz conditions are met.
